This light, which is made from sculpted styrofoam, will be great in areas of the coffee shop where I want to draw the visitor's attention. Both the sculptural quality of the fixture and the dramatic light that it emits are bound to attract the eye. I think that, as opposed to the TR 15 lights, the Feather light will be best in areas that are more intimate, like in the lounge spaces of the coffee shop or corner booths in the game room. While this light gives off some diffused light from the top of the fixture, the "feathers" create a directed beam of light, which will make the spaces sufficiently bright while maintaining intimacy.

Super Nova Huggable, Inflatable Lights by Clean Room, Inc

These huggable, inflatable lights would be great for adding diffused brightness to different areas around the coffee shop. Their shape and flexibility would make them perfect for lounge areas and/or in the game room. The cool light that they give off is intense, but the large shape keeps the light from being too directed. I think that the cool-temperatured glow would be a great way to draw coffee drinkers to a quiet lounge place, much like moths to a flame.

Slot Recessed Wall Light by David Chipperfield

This wall light will serve as an excellent way finding light in the coffee shop. I also saw similar lights used to light a bathroom this summer, and I loved the streamlined simplicity. In a small, enclosed space like a bathroom, this floor to ceiling light provided ample brightness. However, I think that this light would be best as a guiding/wayfinding fixture in a hallway, as in the above photo since lighting vertical surfaces is a good way to guide the eye through the space.

On the other hand, these lights could also be utilized in a grouping to highlight a specific feature. I envision a group of tightly spaced slot lights on or behind the coffee bar to draw attention to this central location.

TR 15 by Tom Rossau

The TR 15 by Tom Rossau would be an ideal light for creating a softly lit space. For my coffee shop, I think that it would be best in areas that I want to feel inviting, like the coffee service area. The wood veneer creates a warm glow, and the natural finish diffuses the light rather than directing it intensely onto a surface. I think that this light will give the space a soft brightness that will draw people to the public spaces and encourage social activities.

Flat Lighting by DMO

These flat lights by DMO would bring both interesting design and intensely directed light to my coffee shop. I think that these lights would be great in the private spaces of the building, like the nap area or the quiet study spaces. For the quiet study areas, I envision these lights positioned in the middle of the room, so that the light washes directly onto the table.

Alternately, these lights could be utilized in the public areas of the coffee shop to call attention to specific architectural features. When the fixture is positioned against a wall, as it is in this photo, the light washes the wall with a directness that draws in the eye to the feature that it highlights.

Saynatsolo Town Hall Library, Saynatsolo, Finland

Designed by Alvar Aalto, the Town Hall in Saynatsolo, Finland exemplifies the Nordic desire to capitalize on the limited natural light.Particular attention is paid to both the daylighting and electric lighting of the space. The large south-facing windows take full advantage of the daylight, and light-sensitive collections are kept in the back of the library away from the sunlight.

As you can see in this photo of the children's reading area, the large vertical mullions serve to direct and control the light throughout the day. This image also shows the detailing in the placement of electric lighting, which is lower in the children's area to accommodate the height of that space's users.

The electric lights give off a warm light, which is a nice contrast to the direct sunlight. Because the lights are also designed by Aalto, they are specific to the nature of the space and and encompass all that would be necessary for finding and reading books.

Bev's Ice Cream

Bev's Ice CreaminCarytown uses a combination of daylight and electric lighting to create a bright space befitting of the icecream experience. They also use the materiality of the space to reflect some, but not too much, light.

This first image shows the light that enters from the large north-facing window that looks out onto Cary street, in combination with the electric pendant lamps.

The pendant lights are made from molded translucent plastic. I would say that they light that they give off is diffused and warm. As you can see in the below photograph, the room also has track lighting, which I would assume is used at night or on days when there is very little light coming in from the north-facing window because they were not on when I visited the space.

In my opinion, the materiality of the greatly contributes to the perception of brightness in the space. The white walls and white ceiling are reflective, and to a lesser degree so is the wood plank floor. The tables are also light wood, which adds luminosity and thus increases the perception of brightness.
